Investment Theory: 'Passive' vs. 'Active'
Much of this investment discussion revolved around
'active' vs. 'passive' investment strategies. Supporters of 'active' strategies argue the
portfolio manager knows best and can outsmart the market. Supporters of 'passive'
strategies argue that portfolio managers add no value and one is better off buying into a
stock or bond index. This talk summarised the current status of this argument and
demonstrated that the overall argument is too simplistic (i.e., the investment world is
not really just 2 dimensional. There are more choices than just 'active' or 'passive').
Other investment alternatives such as 'enhanced indexing' and 'leveraged indexing' were
presented. |
