Semiconductors: Impurities

• n-type semiconductor: adding atoms with more electrons, the excess electrons will accommodate in the empty band, making the substance conducting

  • Add arsenic to germanium

• p-type semiconductor: adding atoms with less electrons, making the filled band partially empty and thus conducting

  • Add boron to germanium
